Army Sgt.’s Remains ID’d

The Department of Defense today announced the death of a soldier, after identifying his remains in Afghanistan.

On May 5, the Armed Forces Medical Examiner positively identified human remains recovered in Afghanistan to be those of a soldier who had been previously listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN). Hero and Staff Sgt., William D. Vile, 27, of Philadelphia, Pa. died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using direct fire May 1 near the village of Nishagam, in Konar Province, Afghanistan.

The same incident caused the deaths of military heroes James Pirtle and Ryan King. Vile was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Vile is the 95th soldier to die since President Obama became the Commander in Chief. To see the entire list of soldiers by name, and in the order of their deaths, click here.
