Conservative American Andrea Tantaros has followed our lead in comparing Michelle Obama to Marie Antoinette and her famous, “Let them eat cake!” line.

On August 4th, we wrote

President Obama will turn 49 alone. Poor guy. His wife and kids are off in some evil corporate jet, destroying the ozone layer, trotting around the world. Michelle sure loves her new lifestyle of the rich and famous. As for the rest of America, worried about the economy, she must think, “Let them eat cake.” Ah, but cake it will be… all alone…. for the Bamster. Don’t you feel for him?

Today the U.K. Telegraph reports…

Michelle Obama is under fire from her husband’s foes for the expense to American taxpayers of taking her younger daughter Sasha on a “girls’ holiday” with friends to a luxurious Spanish retreat. Andrea Tantaros, a Republican party strategist, caricatured the First Lady as a “modern-day Marie Antoinette” in a scathing New York newspaper column. Some among a flurry of newspaper and television reports, have estimated the cost to the American taxpayer of her entourage’s trip at $375,000, drawing criticism as much of the US is mired in economic gloom. Her stay at the lavish Villa Padierna in the hills above Marbella – where rooms cost up to $2,000 a night – has coincided with the news that the US lost 131,000 jobs last month, significantly more than expected.

The brilliant Tantaros wrote in her op ed on August 5th

For a couple that has sharply criticized former President George W. Bush so widely, they could stand to follow his example for once and select a more low-key locale, as Bush regularly did in his Texas vacations. Instead, Michelle Obama seems more like a modern-day Marie Antoinette – the French queen who spent extravagantly on clothes and jewels without a thought for her subjects’ plight – than an average mother of two. While she’s spent her time in the White House telling parents they should relieve their chubby kids’ dependency on sugar and stressing the importance of an organic veggie garden, hopping a jet to Europe to meet with Spanish royalty isn’t the visual the White House probably wants to project. Perhaps they’ve forgotten the damning image of John Kerry, on the eve of the 2004 election, windsurfing off the coast of Nantucket?

The U.K. Telegraph says the Gibbs White House Team thinks Tantaros has her facts wrong…

Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, declined to comment on Mrs Obama’s holiday, saying “she is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip”. But officials have quietly been briefing that some reports of the costs are exaggerated. The First Lady and Sasha, nine, are not travelling with 40 friends, as has been reported, but with two friends and four of their daughters, plus four staff members, an official said. She and her friends are paying for their rooms, food and travel in Spain, the official. But the US government is picking up the bill for her security costs – including an undisclosed number of Secret Service agents and official vehicles – and the flights on Air Force Two. Probably even more damaging are the images of Mr Obama’s wife enjoying her Spanish jaunt even as many Americans lose their jobs at home. “Sacrifice is something that many Americans are becoming all too familiar with during this economic downturn,” noted Ms Tantaros in her widely-read column.

No doubt the number on the trip is 40. Tantaros is correct to note the hypocrisy from the First Family, just as dems would do (and have done) every chance they get when a republican is in office. The dems just can’t handle the heat. If she doesn’t want to be blasted for living so lavishly, then perhaps she could stop… living so lavishly! That’s the point Tantaros was making. She is correct to note other examples too, such as the $100,000 reported figure for a separate plane ride for the First Dog!

Others are picking up on the “Let them eat cake!” theme as well. Bob Schneider posted this image on his Facebook page…
